If what you want is a similar style of stealth where you also have some good ranged options to "go loud" if you're caught, maybe Dishonored instead of Thief? You don't usually want to be in open combat, but you do have a lot of tools (including a pistol and grenades) and supernatural powers that make open, ranged combat an alternative to running away when things go bad.
